XML Access (XML Configuration Service) is a command-line batch-processing utility for exporting & importing various portal configuration. It can export specific pages, complete or partial configuration from one portal to another.

By default, portal provides set for standard XML sample with WPS installation, we can find them in

\IBM\WebSphere\PortalServer\doc\xml-samples

XML configuration interface or XML Access is designed to transfer all or part of a Portal configuration including user data from one system to another.
  • It is used for backing up the configuration of certain Environments, for loading new configurations, or for updating existing portlets when a new WAR file is provided by development.
  • XML Access overwrites objects referred to as 'artifacts' or 'resources' it finds on the target system with the values specified in the XML file.
  • Objects not present in the target system but defined in the XML will be created. This tool greatly eases the duplication of a portal environment from server A to server B.
  • XML Access updates pages & portlets without losing user customization. User customization to a page or a portlet is retained because the object IDs are retained
