What are Rendering portlets and their types ?

Rendering portlets are used to display IBM® Workplace Web Content Management™ content and components within a portal page.

There are two types of rendering portlets:

Local Rendering portlet

A Local Rendering portlet can be used to display content within a portlet. This portlet is used with the same instance of WebSphere Portal where Web Content Management is installed.

Remote Rendering portlet

A Remote Rendering portlet can be used to display content within a portlet located on a different portal server than the instance of IBM WebSphere® Portal where Web Content Management is installed. A remote rendering portlet can be installed on WebSphere Portal versions 5.1 and 6.0.

Restriction: Link elements cannot be displayed in remote rendering portlets.

there is also 3rd types of Portlet in WCM and i.e
pre rendering portlets
You can enable pre-rendering so that content can be viewed either through a Workplace Web Content Management application or as a standalone site that is accessed through a Web server.

To enable users to access the pre-rendered site you need to updated WCMConfigService.properties
