What is the difference between Portal Migration and PortalUpgrade?

WebSphere Portal Server migration does not upgrade the WebSphere Portal Server v5.1, but rather is a set of steps to recreate the environment onto a newly installed WebSphere Portal Server v6.0. This install of WebSphere Portal Server v6.0 can be on the same machine or installed on a different one. The process moves the applications and configurations from the WebSphere Portal Server v5.1 to the WebSphere Portal Server v6.0. There is no process for upgrading a WebSphere Portal Server v5.1 to WebSphere Portal Server v6.0.

Similarly, the migration process does not upgrade the themes, portlets, custom code and components to use the new features of WebSphere Portal Server v6.0. If migration is successful the portal should look and behave the same way it did on the WebSphere Portal Server V5.1 environment. Taking advantage of new features such as drag-and-drop themes is a separate task that should be undertaken after a successful migration.
