Best practices to be followed before installing WebSphere Portal Server?

Installing WebSphere Portal Server is very easy for experienced portal developers but for new users its always good to read installation best practices to avoid any future issues. I have compiled a list of some of the Best Practices that can be followed before installing WPS.
Be sure to read
  • Info Center for Installation (planning and installation steps).
  • Check out the Release notes.
  • Tech notes: there are many available on the net.
  • Always use “custom” installation.
  • Create a WPS profile after installation is completed.
On Windows :
  • Ensure the installation path has no spaces or special characters.
  • Use short path names and node names (to avoid 259 character limits) .
  • I like to use C:\WID for WebSphere Integration Developer.I like to use C:\WPS for WebSphere Portal Server.
  • I like to use C:\WAS for WebSphere Application Server.
  • If Oracle 10g is your database server and you use their OCI JDBC Driver, be aware that the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant will not run on Windows Server 2003.
  • You must edit \network\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora file manually.
  • When using Oracle as the database server, the database name for the WPRCSDB during profile creation will be the SID name of the Oracle instance E.g. enter ORCL, not WPRCSDB in the WPS profile creation wizard.
